The Ritual

Sixty seconds. Daily.

A bowl, a whisk, hot water. The traditional method is still the best one.

Tools

Five things you need.

Chawan

Chawan

The matcha bowl. Wide and shallow so the whisk has room to move.

Chasen

Chasen

Bamboo whisk. The bristles break up clumps and create the foam.

Chashaku

Chashaku

Small bamboo scoop. One scoop is roughly 1g of matcha.

Sieve

Sieve

Optional but recommended. Kills clumps before whisking.

Kettle

Kettle

Any kettle, just don't boil the water. 75°C is the sweet spot.

The four steps

Make it in sixty seconds.

01

Sift

2g of matcha into your bowl. Sifting kills clumps so the whisk does its job.

02

Pour

40ml of water at 75°C. Hot enough to extract, cool enough not to burn the matcha.

03

Whisk

Quick W motion until a smooth layer of foam appears.

04

Drink

Straight, or topped with milk for a latte. Then go run your day.

🎁 First subscription order ships with a free bamboo whisk

Variations

Three ways to drink it.

Hot latte

Whisk as above, then top with 200ml of steamed milk. Oat milk is the best non-dairy option.

🧊

Iced matcha

Whisk with cold water and a splash of warm to dissolve. Pour over a glass of ice. Add milk if you want a creamy iced latte.

Smoothie

Throw 1g of Premium into your blender with banana, oat milk, and spinach. Performance breakfast.

Don't do these

Four things that ruin a cup.

Water that's too hot.

Boiling water = bitter, burnt matcha. Let the kettle rest for a minute.

Not sifting.

Lumpy matcha. Always sift if you can.

Whisking in circles.

It doesn't aerate properly. Zig-zag, not stir.

Using too little.

One scoop minimum. Less than that and you won't get the flavour or the effect.
